This Year’s Sanctuary Festival: 2021

Join us at Hastings Museum and Art Gallery on Saturday 12th September 12.00-6.00pm for a day of music, spoken word poetry, workshops, kids activities and more!

We will be running a stall and registering new volunteers.

Sanctuary Festival will also launch  ‘Crossings: community and refuge’ a new exhibition co-curated with the Refugee Buddy Project, featuring the poignant Lampedusa Cross and the work by Syrian-born, UK- based artist Issam Kourgbaj, Dark Water Burning.   More information here

The Refugee Buddy Project has been working with Hastings Museum in the lead up to this exhibition. Syrian/Kurdish artist, Helen Dodaki, seeking refuge here in Hastings, has been delivering art workshops to the refugee and migrant communities living in Hastings. The artwork produced at these workshops will be on show too, for the duration of the exhibition.

On the day, we will also be Co-producing a film with Hastings Museum, capturing people’s reactions to the exhibition. Fatima Esaily will be the presenter on the film made by Fizzel Castro who made the wonderful banner drop film for us last year. The short film will make part of the exhibition.

1pm, Dunbar Hall: Join us for a talk exploring the themes of the show, including questions of identity, belonging and sharing our world. With curator Jill Cook from the British Museum, artist Issam Kourbaj and Rossana Leal Director of the refugee Buddy project

2.30pm, Dunbar Hall: Come and meet Hastings Against Raids to find out what you can do to defend your neighbours at risk of deportation. Meet the Refugee Buddy Project and find out how you can get involved in welcoming people seeking refuge in Hastings.

Zrinka Bralo CEO of Migrants Organise will also talk about how we can resist the new proposed racist immigration bill.

Check out the programme for the day when you get there and look out for Helen singing with the Barefoot Opera and teaching us some dance moves at some point in the day.

Come along for the day and enjoy the music, food and wonderful social gathering, get to the workshops, help out on the stall, come and meet Chelsey Beaney our new Buddy Coordinator and Sofia Goncalves our Café development manager. It will be a great time to just come and hang out with other buddies
